Pride Wins in Overtime, while Lady Cyclones Draw 1-1

(8/31/08) In this afternoon's first game of the Centenary College Lady Cyclones Kickoff Classic Tournament, the Greensboro College Pride evened their early season record with a 2-1 overtime victory over Lebanon Valley College.

Greensboro took the early advantage when Katie Timmons played a terrific cross into the box from just outside the right-hand edge, and found the foot of Cassie Shepherd.  Shepherd promptly planted the pass into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.  For the remainder of the half, the opposition, Lebanon Valley created the scoring opportunities out-shooting Greensboro 4-2 in the opening period.  In the second half, the teams again traded a few decent chances until the 61st minute.  Leb Val’s Lauren King tied the game 1-1 when her first shot was saved and rebounded directly back to her, giving her a second chance which she put away.  The Dutchmen held off a few late scoring chances, as goalkeeper Alyson Reitmeyer made three second half saves, sending the game into extra time.

The contest was then decided just three minutes into the overtime period, when the Pride’s Tessa Hall took on three Leb Val defenders in the box and slipped the ball into the bottom left corner registering the win for Greensboro College.

In the final game of the 2008 Lady Cyclone Kickoff Classic Centenary College and  Drew University drew to a 1-1 tie, after 110 hard fought minutes.  The result moves Centenary to 0-1-1 on the year, while Drew goes to 1-0-1.

In the first half both teams notched goals, with Centenary getting on the board first with a free kick from 20 yards out by Lauren Loe (Dana Point, CA/Corona Del Mar) in the 5th minute.  Drew then was able to answer late in the half on a breakaway goal from Emily Weida (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Country Day) in the 40th minute.

The second half again saw many chances, however with neither team able to capitalize. Both Ashley Denti (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) for Centenary and Ann Mularz (Linden, NJ/Linden) for Drew were strong in the net, keeping their respective teams tied at a goal a piece at the end of regulation.

The overtime periods were both exciting however as was the story of the game, neither team could find the net resulting in the eventual 1-1 tie. For the day, Denti finished with three saves while Drew’s Mularz finished with 10, several taking away certain goals.

Men's Soccer Nets First Win 1-0 in Double OT

(8/31/08) In day two at the Lycoming College Men’s Soccer Tournament, the Centenary Cyclones again needed double-overtime to gain a result.  However, after notching a 1-1 tie in yesterday’s opener versus Lycoming, the Cyclones recorded a victory beating Alfred College 1-0 on a game winning goal by Chris Hill (Flanders/Gil St. Bernard’s).

Throughout the entire contest it was the Cyclones who controlled much of the possession creating numerous scoring opportunities.  Centenary recorded 21 shots on goal over the three-plus periods, but it wasn’t until Patrick Trivino (Lyndhurst/St. Mary’s)  found Hill for the combination’s second tally in as many days, that the Men came away with a victory.

The win moves the Cyclones to 1-0-1 on the early season, as was good enough for a second place finish at the tournament..  Lycoming, who scored five goals on the weekend, was crowned the Tournament Champion by way of a goal-differential tie breaking system.

Junior goalkeeper Damien DiBuono (Succasunna/Morris Catholic) who held a 0.42 GAA for the pair of games, senior Josh Spivack (Budd Lake/Mt. Olive) who played a solid midfield, and senior Chris Hill who scored both of the team’s goals on the weekend were all named to All-Tournament team.  Boxscore
